To prepare for your lead extraction procedure, follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
- Observe the directions for taking any prescribed medications prior to the surgery. Do not stop taking any medications until instructed to do so by your doctor or nurse. Usually, blood thinners are stopped before the surgery.
- Inform your healthcare provider of all the medicines, vitamins, and supplements that you are taking.
- Your healthcare provider may ask you to stop certain medications a few days before the procedure.
- Your healthcare provider might ask for tests like an ECG, echocardiography, venogram, and blood tests before the procedure.
- Let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant before having the procedure. The imaging used during the procedure uses radiation, which may be a risk to the fetus.
- Do not eat solid foods after midnight. You may have clear liquid diet, including apple or white grape juice, clear broth, coffee or tea (Without milk or cream), and water until 4 hours before your procedure time or 2 hours before your arrival time.
- Bring a picture ID card.
- Bring someone to drive you back home as you might be under the effect of anesthesia and pain medicine.
- You are required to stay overnight in the hospital after the procedure.
- Leave your valuables like jewelry at home.
- Take a bath or shower before you come for the procedure. Do not apply lotions, perfumes, deodorants or nail polish after the shower.
- Do not shave the surgical site yourself.
