Recovery from POEM (Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy)

You will need to recover from the anesthesia in the endoscopy unit after the POEM procedure is completed. Your doctor will speak to you about the operation. You will be admitted to the hospital for antibiotics treatment and for observation to make sure there are no complications. On the night of the operation, you will continue to fast.

Most of the patients only stay for one day. A barium X-ray (a white liquid that shows up clearly on an x-ray)  will be performed the morning after the operation to ensure that your food pipe is open and there is no leakage. You'll be placed on a liquid diet and released from the hospital the next day.

For maximum healing after the POEM procedure, follow a Post POEM diet. Click here to learn more on Post POEM Diet.
