While it is generally recommended to avoid all unnecessary medications while pregnant, many over the counter medications can be used safely.
The following medications and techniques can be used safely:
- Vitamin Supplements
Daily intake of Iron and folic acid tablets are recommended during pregnancy. If you have Vitamin D deficiency, your doctor may recommend a Vitamin D supplement.
- Nausea / Vomiting
Vitamin B6: 50mg 1-3 times per day
Doxylamine (Unisom): ½ tablet can be taken with Vitamin B6. This is a sleeping aid with antinausea properties and can be sedating
- Fever / Headache
Acetaminophen: Do not exceed the daily dosage.
DO NOT take aspirin or ibuprofen unless directed by your doctor
- Acid Reflux & Indigestion
Eat frequent smaller meals.
Avoiding lying down for 1 hour after eating
Avoid spicy or acidic foods
Zantac (ranitidine)
- Constipation
Increase your water and vegetable intake
Fiber supplements
Stool softener
- Hemorrhoids
Increase your water intake
Fiber supplements
- Cough / Cold
Saline nasal spray
Cough syrup containing dextromethorphan
Antihistamines: Allegra
