There are two main types of stents:

1. A bare metal stent (BMS)

2. Drug eluting stent (DES)

Drug-eluting stents have recently become more widely used due to their demonstrated effectiveness in delivering restenosis-suppressing medication through a coated metal material. An interventional cardiologist will determine the appropriate type of stent to implant depending on a patient's individual case.
